Summer Storm Sculpture

summerstorm

Summer Storm is a stainless steel sculpture created by Michael Helbing. Located at Courthouse Square 2nd and Washington Streets, it is just few steps from the memorial set up by the community for the locals who died in the war. The sculpture is a true gift to the memory of those victims.

As Helbing himself is a Vietnam War veteran, his sculptures deeply influence his work. Talking about the Summer Storm, Helbing says “I find inspiration in the shape of a tree and the way its limbs define shape against the sky. Drawing life studies of a dancer’s movement and working to capture the gesture have reinforced my interest in implying motion. I blend these together with my dreams and a sense of wonder with the construction of the universe to create sculpture that move and captivate a person from all angles.”

Michael Helbing’s is metal sculptor who spent his early life in Midwestspending but is now based in Chicago. His artwork showcases the emotions from his days spent in Vietnam. He created the Summer Storm in the Sculpture Invitational commissioned by the Columbus Area Arts Council who wanted to build a collection of public art created by distinguished artists.
