Sycamore Place

‘Sycamore Place’ is a complex in Columbus, Indiana which was specially designed and built for senior citizens. This was a public housing project planed in association with ‘Cummins Engine Foundation Architectural Fee Program’ as a part of renewal of urban areas in downtown Columbus.

The project was assigned to ‘Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects’ - a very efficient architectural firm in Columbus of Indiana which is very famous for its rich brick and marble constructions. The project of ‘Sycamore Place Elderly Housing’ was completed in 1982. This complex makes a simple but beautiful sight in downtown Columbus. This is another building in Columbus which can be regarded as a very significant architectural structure. There are 28 one bedroom apartments in the complex. Each of the apartments has its own balcony and individual terrace. Apart from this, there are heat pumps provided for every unit and each apartment has a door opening in a common corridor. The windows open along each side and they exhibit various window designs.

Out of the 28 apartments, there are three units specially designed for those elderly people who are physically challenged and face problems in climbing the staircases.

The technology mainly used for the construction of Sycamore Place Elderly Housing was Standard and that of stick-built home building. Prefabricated frames and standard off-the-shelf components of building were used here which eventually resulted into a good construction at low cost.

Apart from being one of the noteworthy architectural features of Columbus city, this place provides senior citizens with a perfect environment to adjust and socialize.
