First Christian Church

The First Christian Church, also called as Tabernacle Church of Christ, is located at 531, 5th St, Columbus, Indiana, build in 1942. Its geographical location is north 39° 12.209 west 85° 55.134. This church is an emblem of modern art and is also considered as one of the National Historic Landmark of Columbus, Indiana.

The building was designed by Eliel Saarinen, constructed with series of asymmetric simple rectangular blocks at the central courtyard. This brickwork bearing building is a concrete combination of brick and limestone; which has a tower, a bridge and one main hall with glass at the front which was planned to resemble reflecting pond .The interior design consists of screen, lavishing furniture and lighting which was done by Eero Saarinen, Eliel’s Son, and inside the church there is tapestry, which is a kind of textile art, done by Loja Saarinen, Eliel’s wife. Time magazine has described this church as one of the most coolest and modern church of the era. Newsweek magazine described this church as one of the most stylish form of modern art compared to those of the older churches in United States. During World War II, the construction of the church was severely impacted but still it stood up brilliantly. Still today the structure is in very good condition as per the report. This was the first church based on contemporary architecture in Columbus and also in United States.
